Maculele New Orleans will be hosting its first Capoeira tournament and batizado for Tulane students March 19-20th, 2010

There will be categories for Kids, Beginners, Intermediates and a special category:

Tulane University vs. Emory University

Capoeira Maculele 2010 Tournament Rules

  • Each contestant should be pre-registered two hours before the start of the competition.
  • Each contestant will sign a waiver and receive a number in addition to a copy of the rules during final registration.
  • All contestants must be in uniform – white abadas, white group uniform shirt and cord.
  • Registration for the tournament will be $25.
  • All participants will play one game to the rhythm of São Bento Grande for one minute.
  • Contact that may physically harm your opponent is not permitted. Traumatic blows such as ponteira, punching, cabeçada to the face, grabbing, pushes or slaps.  Contestants delivering any movement deemed malicious will be disqualified.  Any student disqualified during the Tulane v. Emory category will receive a score of 0.
  • Participants will be awarded points (1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest) based on the following categories: technique, diversity of play, and creativity. 
  • In case of a tie, the students will play one game to the rhythm of Benguela for one minute.
  • The 3 highest cumulative scores will win first, second and third place.
  • The higher average score will determine the winning University.

  • First place – Trophy or medal
  • Second place – Trophy or medal
  • Third place – Trophy or medal

Objective

The objective of the tournament is:

  • To bring together Capoeiristas from Tulane and Emory University
  • To have a competition of harmony and technique within the rhythm of play
  • To play with the fundamentals of the toques and jogos of capoeira

Categories

  • Iniciante: no corda – 4th corda; 1 – 1 ½ years of Capoeira
  • Intermediario: 5th corda – 10th corda; 2 – 4 ½ years of Capoeira
  • Graduados: only Graduado corda
  • Tulane vs. Emory: only students from each University
